Our History

  • Founded in 2006 by Jose Echeverry & Rolexi Pinzon, two former Underwater Rugby Players from the Colombian clubs Cachalotes (Pereira) and Castores (Bogota), who still believe that the best way to promote the sport is through developing organized clubs that provide recreational and competitive opportunities.

  • NJ Hammerheads is a member of the Underwater Society of America (USOA), the national governing body for our sport.

2006

NJ Hammerheads win their first tournament on the 1st. Underwater Rugby tournament East Haven, Connecticut.

2009

First International participation for an American Underwater Rugby Club at the 3rd Round of the Colombian National UWR Championship – Pereira, Colombia.

2010

Participation at the 2nd Round of the Colombian Underwater Rugby Nationals – Bogota , Colombia.

2011

NJ Hammerheads won the 1st ever North American Underwater Rugby Tournament at Brantford, ON, Canada.

2014

First US Club to participate at the Champions Cup in Berlin, Germany (the top UW Rugby Club tournament in the world).

2015

Nine (9) NJ Hammerheads players were proudly selected for the US National UW Rugby Teams (8 men, 1 woman) to participate in the 10th CMAS Underwater Rugby World Championships in Cali, Colombia.

2017

First US Club to participate at the Firenze Cup – Firenze, Italy.

2017

Second US Club to have their own Women’s Underwater Rugby Team participating at the North American Tournaments.

2019

Eight (8) NJ Hammerheads players were proudly selected for the US National UW Rugby Teams (5 men, 3 women) to participate in the 11th CMAS Underwater Rugby World Championships in Graz, Austria.

2022

Our Hammerheads Ladies make history winning their first USA National Championship

2022

Our Hammerheads Ladies make history again having an impressive first participation at the 2022 Champions Cup in Berlin with a record of 3W-2L

2023

Six (6) NJ Hammerhead ladies were proudly selected for the US National UW Rugby Team, while six (6 men) are still in the selection process to participate in the 12th CMAS Underwater Rugby World Championships in Montreal, Canada 2023
